How to Avoid Traffic Fines When Driving a Rental Car in UAE
Practical tips to stay fine-free while driving in the UAE — speed cameras, school zones, phone rules, and more.
Use Waze or Google Maps
Both apps mark speed cameras, variable speed zones, and accident-prone areas. Waze is especially good for real-time speed camera alerts from the community.
Set Your Cruise Control
On highways, set cruise control to the posted limit. Most cameras have a 20 km/h buffer (e.g., 120 km/h limit = camera triggers at 141 km/h), but don't rely on this — it's not officially confirmed.
Watch for Variable Speed Zones
Some roads (especially in Abu Dhabi) use electronic speed signs that change based on traffic, weather, and time of day. Always follow the displayed limit, not the permanent signs.
School Zones Are Serious
School zone cameras are active during school hours. The limit drops to 40 km/h and fines are doubled. These zones are clearly marked with flashing lights.
Don't Use Your Phone
Even holding a phone while driving triggers AED 800 fines. Use a phone mount and hands-free calling, or Apple CarPlay/Android Auto through the car's infotainment system.
Seatbelts for Everyone
All passengers must wear seatbelts — front and back. The driver is responsible and fined AED 400 if any passenger is unbuckled.
Check Your Fines Regularly
Use the Dubai Police app, Abu Dhabi Police app, or MOI UAE app to check for fines. Catching them early helps avoid surprises on your security deposit deduction.
